VI Peel: How It Works and What To Expect
Summer is approaching, which means you’ll be wearing bathing suits, tank tops, and sundresses. The wardrobe change is also a stark reminder of those bothersome acne scars on your back.
You’re ready to make a change. You’ve seen the impressive before and afters of skin peels while scrolling through Instagram but which type is right for you?
VI peels are a non-invasive treatment that can be used for a variety of skin problems. Learn all the details of VI peels and we peel away the nuances and gain insight into what to expect, benefits, and more.
What Is a VI Peel?
A VI peel is a type of chemical peel that uses special ingredients formulated by the Vitality Institute. By removing the damaged top layer of skin, a VI peel restores the underlying skin.
A VI peel can be used as a treatment to target:
- Uneven skin texture
- Inconsistent pigmentation
- Acne scarring
- Large pores
- Wrinkles; and
- Fine lines
How VI Peels Works
Considered a medium-depth peel, a VI chemical peel penetrates and exfoliates beyond the first layer of skin. A VI peel’s ingredients rejuvenate the skin underneath and stimulate collagen production.
While there are many peel options, the VI peel formula uses a special blend of five ingredients including:
- Trichloroacetic acid (TCA): This ingredient is responsible for exfoliating the skin and aids in resurfacing of the skin.
- Phenol: This targets the deeper layer of tissue by assisting in exfoliation and has antiseptic properties to help reduce the risk of infection.
- Salicylic acid: This ingredient is found in many acne treatments and helps revitalize the skin by exfoliating and cleaning the pores.
- Vitamin C: This antioxidant helps brighten the skin underneath and helps with collagen production. Collagen is responsible for maintaining structure, support, and elasticity for your skin.
- Tretinoin: Also known as retinoic acid, this ingredient has anti-aging properties that help reduce fine lines, smooth pigmentation, and help treat acne.
Areas Where VI Peels Can Be Used
VI peels are used to target many skin imperfections. Given a VI peel is a gentle treatment regimen, it can be used anywhere on your body including these particularly challenging areas:
- Face
- Eyelids
- Chest
- Back
- Hands
Ideal Candidates for VI Peels
While VI peels are considered a safe treatment method for all skin types, there are some conditions where this treatment method may not be as effective or contraindicated.
This includes individuals who:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have severe eczema
- Are allergic to aspirin, hydroquinone, or phenol
- Used Accutane within the last 6 months
- Underwent chemotherapy or radiation within the last 6 months; or
- Have an autoimmune condition, like lupus
Everyone’s skin responds differently to cosmetic treatments so a consultation is recommended before starting VI peel treatment to determine if this is the best regimen for your skin and your goals.
At Goodskin Dermatology, we offer a range of cosmetic treatments at our Clackamas and Troutdale locations. During your initial consultation, you will work with our experienced staff to review your medical history, discuss your treatment goals, and determine the best treatment path for your individual needs. Call today to schedule your initial consultation.
Treatment results may vary depending on the condition and individual patient. As always, consult with your healthcare provider before beginning treatment.
What to Expect During Your VI Peel
After your initial consultation, an esthetician will first cleanse your skin of makeup, sweat, oil, dirt, etc. by using a purifying agent. This is a critical step to maximize the benefits of a VI peel.
Next, the esthetician will apply the VI peel solution in two layers using a spatula or brush-type applicator. You may experience some tingling or a numbing effect with the first layer.
Once the first layer is applied, the esthetician will apply the second layer. The skin will turn white and is described as a “frost.”
After your treatment appointment, you will wash off the peel using warm water and a mild cleanser. You will also apply the specialized moisturizer that was given to you. This will be completed at home, four to six hours after your appointment.
At Goodskin Dermatology, we prioritize your well-being throughout your treatment. Our experienced estheticians take the time to explain each step of the treatment as well as aftercare instructions so you leave feeling confident and comfortable.
How Long Does a VI Peel Take?
A VI peel is a quick process. You can expect your treatment appointment to last about 30 minutes.
How Long Do VI Peels Results Last?
The peeling process begins four to seven days after the treatment. After your skin is done peeling, you’ll start to notice renewed and glowing skin. You may notice continual improvements in your skin up to six weeks after your peel.
The results vary for how long they last depending on the severity of your skin problem and lifestyle factors like the use of sunscreen following treatment.
After approximately six weeks, you may consult your esthetician to determine if another VI peel treatment session is recommended to address any remaining skin issues.
